There are many rescue organizations that go to the shelters and adopt a cat or dog before it is put to sleep with the hope of finding them a loving home.

The average time the LA County Shelters are able to keep an animal, before the county is forced to euthanized it, is about 10 days. Often it is too short a time to find a loving home for the helpless animal. Many rescue organizations pay the adoption fee and temporarily adopt numerous cats and dogs before the their final day. With more time, rescue group then try to find homes for them.

Our fostering program helps such groups place a cat or dog in a temporary home as they work to find a permanent one. A foster parents’ efforts will also help prepare the animal for adoption. The average time is 2 weeks to 2 months. You can foster an animal even if you have a pet of your own.

Foster Progam Requirements:

Understand that all the animals have been rescued from shelters and there may be an adjustment period. Many of the animals are scared and shy at first. We are happy to help out with advice and encouragement or place it in another home.

Be willing to foster your pet from rescue to adoption. The amount of time needed to find a permanent home for a dog can vary from a few days to a few months. You must be committed to the foster process in order for the dog to be adopted. This includes making your home and dog available to a prospective adopter and attending adoption events.

If you are working full time, there must be a safe place for the dog to be while you are gone. If the dog will be outside while you are away there needs to be a shelter for the dog to retreat to during stormy or hot weather. A fence of at least 6 feet is recommended to prevent a dog from jumping over. If the dog is to remain indoors we will provide a crate whenever possible.

When you are home we ask that the dog be treated as a member of your family. The dog MUST be able to sleep inside the house at night.
